Bill Duquette Passes

April 21st, 2013

DCA has learned of the passing of Bill Duquette – a member of the CT Hurricane family for over 40 years. Bill served the corps in many capacities: Corps Director, Instructor, Drum Major and Horn Player to mention just a few.

He was very active in DCA, representing the Hurricanes. Many consider the 1981 DCA Championship for his corps to be a keystone in their history and a success that he was very much a part of. Bill instructed numerous corps and high school bands and for a time was corps director of DCI’s Spirit of Atlanta as well as past co-director of Park City Pride Alumni Corps. He remained active to the end, serving on the advisory board of the Hurricanes.

Bill was dedicated to the drum corps activity and especially to his Hurricanes and DCA. We send along our condolences to his wife and many family and friends as well as the CT Hurricanes organization.

Individual & Ensemble/Mini Corps 2013 Information

March 27th, 2013

DCA Mini Corps and I&E Information available now:  DCA Championship Page

Welcome DCA I&E and Mini Corps Participants and Fans!   This will be the first of a series of planned updates for the 2013 I&E/MiniCorps Competition being held this year on Friday August 30, 2013 in Annapolis MD.   The entire Competition will be held again at the Navy-Marine Corps Stadium and it will continue to have no spectator admission fee.   There will be a parking fee should you want to park on the Stadium grounds.

Mini Corps

The BIG news is that the Mini Corps size will be increased to up to 25 participants from 21 participants.  Another change for the Mini Corps is that the registration is opening immediately!!!   Part of the reason for this change is the new process which is being introduced for the synch/mechanical/digital rights which needs to be completed and entered into a new computerized process by May 31, 2013.   Therefore, competing groups will need to accelerate the timetable for rights to arrange and perform to meet this new deadline.

Additionally, along with the increase in the Mini Corps size comes an increase in the fee to participate to $125 up from the previous $100.  This fee is still economical because it will be less than the $10 per person charge for the I&E portion of the evening.

The new registration form will state that for all of last year's competitors that will need to register and pay all fees by June 1, 2013.    All new entrants will have a similar deadline for their registration and fees.   It is good to remind all participants in this category that the previous year's competitors have the right to the first competitive slots and then all new entrants will be entered by postmark.    Another reminder, because of the noise ordinance, there could be a need to limit the number of Mini Corps to compete.   However, we could host up to 16 Mini Corps within the evenings.

Individual & Ensemble

Based off of the successful introduction of the Battery Ensemble division to last year's competition, DCA has decided to offer a Brass Choir division to the Competition in 2013.   A Brass Choir will allow groups with more than 10 brass players to enter this division.   The timing is planned to be between a 2 to 4 or 5 minute interval (though the final rule has not yet been determined).

Some other changes will be the locations of certain of the events.   We will be changing the Visual/Guard performances to be on the floor of the Stadium and the Percussion events will be moved to the area by the Score Board and parking lot.   In addition, there will be better signage to ensure that the performers and fans alike should have a better experience.

We expect the registration and rules to be available sometime between May 15 and June 15, 2013.   Please check the DCA Championship Page for the release of the I&E information.

One other change for both events will be revisions to the Scoring process.   The DCA judging administration is working with the Chair to ensure that there is consistency and fairness to the process based on the event entered.   Participants will be made aware of any changes to the process before the event in August.

You can look forward to another release in the upcoming months!!!

2012 Rules Congress!

December 8th, 2012

Drum Corps Associates (DCA) held its 2012 Rules Congress in Baltimore, MD today and have the following to announce:

The 2014/2015 DCA World Championships will be held in Rochester, New York. The Championship Committee received many bids and Rochester was selected. Plans are under way for a spectacular 50th year anniversary of DCA! Stay tuned for more information.

You can order tickets for the 2013 DCA World Championships in Annapolis, Maryland by going to the DCA website.

Additionally, the directors and executive board agreed to allow the use of amplification for acoustic percussion equipment, beginning with the 2014 competitive season.

The change was approved after much deliberation through educational staff caucuses and debate on the membership floor. The rule will allow for amplification of currently approved concert and keyboard percussion instruments already utilized by DCA corps.

This rule does NOT allow for the use of synthesizers, stringed instruments, or the amplification of voice or brass instruments.

A fantastic summer schedule is about to be announced with shows in over six states with a possibility of Scranton, PA being a regional with ten corps competing!

Chuck Saia –

August 7th, 2012

Chuck Saia marched in his hometown Johnstown (PA) 'Blue Devils' before moving to Harrisburg PA in 1961 where he joined the 'Westshoremen Bonnie Scots'.  Chuck performed for a number of years in the percussion section before becoming a board member and eventually business manager.  During his time as business manager of the Westshoremen, he was the driving force  in forming the 'Red Carpet Association', an organization of competitive senior corps in the Pennsylvania area.

During the 1970's Chuck was asked to be part of Drum Corps Associates.  He served in many capacities in DCA for the next 35 years including being chief judge during the infamous hurricane at the 2006 World Championship Prelims in Rochester New York.

In 1983, along with friends Bill and Rose Light, Larry Hershman and Craig Kern, Chuck founded 'Five Star Brass Productions Inc.'  'Five Star Brass'  became the premier production company for such notable events as 'Serenade in Brass', 'The Hershey Spectacular', 'Review of the Corps' as well many jazz concerts featuring Doc Sevrinisen, Maynard Ferguson, Dave Stahl and Buddy Rich.

In addition to his drum and bugle corps career, Chuck was very active with performing youth organizations being named to the 'Hall Of Fame' in both 'Cavalcade of Bands' and the 'Keystone Indoor Drill Association'.

Xtreme Summer Classic Goes to Buccaneers

August 1st, 2012

The Reading Buccaneers remain undefeated as they swept all captions tonight in Robbinsville and have their sights on regaining the DCA title. Powerful in all sections, the Bucs horn line will blow you away while the percussion section with their stick handling is something to watch. Reading is taking no prisoners in their path on the way to Annapolis.

The Connecticut Hurricanes definitely have the Olympic spirit this year with their all British music program. The addition of new members to the horn line will definitely help as the Hurcs horn line is starting to gel at the right time. Pay close attention to the percussion feature as it is entertaining and highly visual. The Hurricanes are improving and coming on strong.

The most improved corps this evening had to be Fusion Core as they gained eight points in total score as their gangster style show is looking for new victims. The horn line has added a killing at the end of their show as a new mobster kingpin takes over. Nicole Marino made her debut as drum major tonight and did a very fine job in leading her corps. Watch this show closely over the next few weeks as this is definitely a fan friendly program.

Carolina Gold show no evidence of fatigue from their long bus trip from North Carolina as the corps placed a strong third in color guard and percussion. Their show "Out of the Shadows", is very dark in nature but very bright in their presentation to the fans. Carolina should be well in contention for the Class A title with some more polish and cleaning.

Jumping five points in score from last week in Lynn, our hosts the Windsor Regiment has finally put all the pieces together and are gaining much confidence and momentum. The color guard in the ballad definitely sells "Hallelujah" with their mini harp props and their role portrayal as angels. A high place finish at Class A finals is definitely in their reach.

The Sunrisers are performing to the best of their ability and still have a great desire to compete and succeed. The crowd enjoyed their entertaining show this evening for sure.

The Reilly Raiders gave a nice post competition exhibition with their salute to the drum corps activity and to the great drum corps of the past with their musical selections. A drum majors only retreat followed luckily as a severe thunderstorm with large hail hit the area as soon as the show ended. A very nice first show as hosts for Windsor Regiment and to all the corps in competition for a show well done.

Mission Drums -Lynn, MA – A success!

July 26th, 2012

After a long absence, the DCA tour returned to Lynn, Mass. at Manning Field, the site of Mission Drums and the World Open in days gone by. The huge crowd that was on hand was treated to an excellent show and a finale that they will remember for a long time

The Hawthorne Caballeros ended their long victory drought by winning tonight's show and are red hot at this point of the DCA season. The Caballeros have added many visual additions and tonight they made the statement that they are ready to go after the Reading Buccaneers. The color guard has greatly improved and captured high honors tonight along with a horn line that is getting better each week

Tonight's runner ups, the Empire Statesmen and their "Las Vegas show" definitely will entertain the fans as their music is comprised mostly of Frank Sinatra tunes, a touch of Cirque du Soleil, and magic tricks that leaving you wondering how they did that.

Queen Elizabeth would be proud and highly entertained with the Connecticut Hurricanes British theme show in 2012. The Hurcs are very well balanced in all sections of the corps and the percussion feature will surely grab your attention. The percussion section was rewarded with high honors this evening.

Windsor Regiment is improving each week and have added three stained glass window panels on the field to reflect the shows cathedral theme 'Angels in the Architecture". The ballad number features the color guard using mini harps as props with large white double butterfly silks that fill the field. Definitely a corps on the rise.

The Sunrisers are presenting the classic music of "Carmen" this season and have much energy and aggressiveness in their performance.  The group is certainly growing!

The Rockland Defenders presented a fine opening show exhibition as they performed many memorable drum corps selections. Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends as the six time World Open Champions, the Bayonne Bridgemen took the field. Large panels with pictures from years gone by are placed around the field and presented a show that only they can do. The "William Tell Overture" encore brought the house down and the fans to their feet. Paying tribute to the 27th Lancers, the Bridgemen joined forces with former members of the 27th Lancers with a mass playing of "Danny Boy". With over one hundred horns combined, this was definitely a drum corps moment.

Famed trumpet soloist, Ritchie Price played our National Anthem and is was good to see him playing again after his lengthy illness. The fans deserve a huge amount of thanks as they were well into this event and gave much support to all the corps while announcer Paul Cain along with his "you may enter the field" call along with the fans is to be credited. An Olympic retreat was held before the scores were announced as the victorious Hawthorne Caballeros performed a victory concert. A huge thanks to all corps and especially George Iacono and his committee for bringing this event back to Lynn!

Some notes from the Clifton, NJ show

July 19th, 2012

Editorial by Bill Flaker, DCA PR Staff

" Buccaneers Win, C2 Debuts in Clifton"

Before a very large and supportive audience, The Reading Buccaneers continued their early season dominance of their opponents while sweeping all captions en route to another victory. The power and excellence displayed by the Bucs this early in the season is leaving all of those who see them saying "WOW"!.

The Hawthorne Caballeros put the pieces together with their hometown fans behind them. The visual additions as well as the cleaning they have done may have put them on track for a highly successful season.

The Connecticut Hurricanes have another exciting show for 2012 and received a large standing ovation from the fans tonight. Their British music show is firing on all cylinders and is definitely fan friendly and highly entertaining.

The long awaited debut of Cadets2 had the fans buzzing as they entered the field. Percussion finished a strong third this evening and is the corps strength so far. The framework is in place for a strong season.

Fusion Core made a large impact on the fans this evening as their horn line placed third as Fusion may have had the most entertaining show of the evening. The gangster style show is working well and this program may very well be the "sleeper" show in DCA in 2012.

Vastly improved since Wildwood, Windsor Regiment has made the progress it needs to be a contender in Class A this season.

Another corps that has improved so far are the Bushwackers with their "American Roots" program based on music that has become a part of American culture. With the addition of new members into the show, this program should grow rapidly in the next few weeks.

The Sunrisers made their 2012 debut tonight and are presenting "Carmen" as their program. Even though  this corps is small in size they put out a large amount of energy tonight.

The Latin Express Mini Corps, New York Skyliners Alumni Corps, DCI Open Class Raiders, and the Hawthorne Caballero Alumni Corps all gave exceptional exhibitions this evening. To start the show, the New York Skyliner Alumni Chorus sang our National Anthem. Many thanks need to go to Al Katz and his staff from the Hawthorne Caballeros for a great evening of drum corps.

The Grand Prix is always one of the best shows on the DCA tour each year and the fans were definitely given a high level show tonight.

Bridgeport – Some notes from the Barnum Festival!

July 5th, 2012

Bill Flaker DCA PR Team

The heat wave that hit the Northeast the past few days was no way as hot as the competition on the field tonight at Kennedy Stadium in Bridgeport. With the stands nearly full, the drum corps fans in attendance were enthusiastic and were rewarded with a great show.

The Reading Buccaneers took it up another notch this evening as they came to play and leave no doubt that they are the early favorites to regain the DCA title. Many visual changes have been made since Wildwood two weeks ago and the back half of this program will have the fans on their feet voicing their approval.

The long bus trip from Minnesota did not detract from the performance of the defending DCA champs, Minnesota Brass Inc. Even with a three hour delay due to a bus breakdown their "Bonnie and Clyde" program complete with a getaway car was a hit with the fans.

The most entertaining show this evening probably was the Las Vegas show presented by the Empire Satesmen. Complete with a solo dancer who disappears and the reappears on the field the Statesmen received a huge standing ovation as they trooped the stands.

The Connecticut Hurricanes have gone in a new direction this year as they are presenting "Blokes and Birds", with British flavored music. The color guard was on fire tonight as they captured top honors while the percussion line finished a strong second.

The Hawthorne Caballeros like the Buccaneers, have made much progress since Wildwood with the horn line and color guard leading the way with third place finishes. Their "Alegria!" program in 2012 is vintage Hawthorne that showcases several outstanding soloists.

The Bushwackers despite being small in size, presented their Americana show with heart and determination to succeed in 2012. Right now the percussion section is the corps strength and with new members coming in the Bushwackers will reach their goals this year.

The New York Skyliners Alumni Corps took the fans down memory lane with many of their trademark musical charts. An encore of "Elks Parade" had the fans on their feet and clapping with the music.

The Westchester Brassmen presented an opening exhibition with a diverse musical book and a drum line that could compete at the DCA level. Their "Mag 7" closer had the Hurricane faithful smiling and clapping in time.

The hometown corps, Park City Pride are using the music of Frank Sinatra this year and are as entertaining as they are talented. Their salute to America closer brought the house down to conclude an outstanding exhibition.

To put the icing on the cake, the Hawthorne Caballero Alumni Corps is a show all by itself. Coming off the line with their trademark "rumps" this unit has the fans attention from start to finish. The color pre of "Flamenca Cha Cha" is still a crowd pleaser that brings the fans to their feet.

The Barnum Festival committee is to be given a huge amount of credit for giving the fans an outstanding drum corps show for the value price of FIVE DOLLARS! That broke down to fifty cent per corps this evening! This is a great way to build the fan base as tonight's event may have been the best ever June competition in DCA memory. All of the corps tonight were more prepared at this time than last year and this years shows may turn out to be the most intense in recent memory. Next stop up next is the Grand Prix in Clifton, N.J. and the much waited debut of Cadets 2 on July 14th.

Wildwood Kicks Off 2012 DCA Season

June 22nd, 2012

Where else can you relax at the Jersey shore, enjoy perfect weather, and watch seven outstanding drum corps kick off the 2012 season? The answer is the "Cabs at the Beach" show in Wildwood, N.J. this past weekend.

The Reading Buccaneers powered their way to victory tonight as classical music and the Bucs go hand in hand. Reading left no doubt at the end of the night that they intent on regaining their title.

The Hawthorne Caballeros displayed their new drums this evening and with fifty plus strong horns in support, the Cabs are more prepared at this time of the year compared to last. This years show is vintage Hawthorne with a lot of energy, power, and entertainment.

Fusion Core has made the move to Open Class this year and the fans will enjoy this gangster style show titled "The Hit" complete with dueling Dons trying to gain control of the Mob. This will be a very entertaining show to watch as the season moves on.

The long drive from North Carolina did not prevent Carolina Gold from giving a strong opening night performance on the field. Their "Out of the Shadows" program features a well balanced horn line which will keep them in contention for the Class A title in Annapolis.

Windsor Regiment is presenting "Angels in the Architecture" in 2012 and the light pastel blue uniforms on the color guard blend in very well with the corps proper of cream and black. With a complete show on the field tonight, Windsor Regiment is off to a good start this season.

The Raiders DCI Open Class corps gave a very good exhibition with a quality sounding horn line. The Raiders are well balanced in all aspects and their goal for 2012 is a top ten finish at finals.

As always, the Hawthorne Caballero Alumni Corps gave the fans an entertaining show that got the fans involved with the performance. Drum Major Jimmy Russo was at his best, while George Hyaek is starting his sixty-sixth consecutive year marching in the honor guard.

The stands at Maxwell Field were filled tonight and the 2012 DCA competitive season is under way. Next stop will be Bridgeport, Ct. next week as the top five corps from last year battle it out for the early season bragging rights. With a five dollar seating price, this is a must see show!

DCA Congratulates World Drum Corps Hall of Fame Inductees

June 6th, 2012

World Drum Corps Hall of Fame 2012 inductees

Written by Roy Wilson (WDCHOF)

The six individuals to be inducted into the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame during this year’s ceremony in Annapolis, Maryland on Saturday, September 1 have applied a wide variety of skills around the world in such areas as instruction, finance, computer automation, instrumentation and youth education in support of competing and alumni drum and bugle corps.

The inductees are George Hopkins of Allentown, Pennsylvania; Joel Matuzak of St. Paul, Minnesota; Dan Rippon of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania; Anthony Smith of Milton, Massachusetts; John “Duke” Terreri of Pine Hill, New Jersey.  John Bosworth of Williamsport, Pennsylvania will be inducted as the winner of this year’s President’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

The induction ceremony will take place on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend, one of several events being held during Drum Corps Associates’ (DCA) annual championship tournament.  Although the Hall of Fame induction is traditionally held on the same weekend as the DCA championships there is no formal connection between the two organizations.

Hall of Fame events will include an exhibit of memorabilia during the social hour before the luncheon and induction ceremony.  The Hall of Fame’s annual general meeting will be held shortly after the induction ceremony concludes.  Members of the public are welcome to attend the social hour and the luncheon.  For ticket information visit the Hall of Fame website at www.worlddrumcorpshof.org/

Each of the 2012 inductees has been active in drum and bugle corps activity since his childhood, in a wide area stretching from the eastern seaboard all the way to the upper mid west area of the United States and across the world to Europe, the Middle East and as far beyond as Australia.

George Hopkins: Allentown, Pennsylvania

For more than 30 years, George Hopkins has been a major proponent of changes in instrumentation, education and contest guidelines, such as initiating the use of band instruments, electronics, removal of sidelines and other alternatives.  During those three decades he has served as director of The Cadets, winners of 10 Drum Corps International (DCI) championships during that time.  He is also the chief executive officer of Youth Education in the Arts (YEA), the umbrella group that operates the Cadets and also serves 60,000 marching band members through the U.S. Scholastic Band Association.  About 200 city youth attend the Urban Arts Center of Allentown, Pennsylvania at no fee.  He has been a member of the DCI board of directors for 28 years, the DCI executive committee for 20 years and has served as chairman of the DCI finance committee.  He has served as percussion instructor and coordinator for a number of prominent junior corps since 1979, including the Cadets, Crossmen, Boston Crusaders and Carolina Crown.  He began his drum corps activity by playing snare drum with Holts Hornets in 1968.

Joel Matuzak:  St. Paul, Minnesota

Joel Matuzak is already widely recognized for his contributions to drum corps activity in arranging, drill writing, serving as a clinician and adjudicating. He is a member of the Minnesota Brass Hall of Fame and the Minnesota Percussion Association Hall of Fame.  He has taken part if every area of drum corps activity: marching, instructing, managing, judging and serving as coordinator.  He has helped expand exposure of drum and bugle corps activity through his efforts as creative director of the Minnesota Brass indoor drum line and the Minnesota Vikings Skol Line, which provides game-day entertainment for the National Football League team.  (Skol, Vikings is the title of the team’s fight song.)  He has been program coordinator of Minnesota Brass since 2002.  He has been percussion caption head since 1997 and percussion and music arranger since 1998.  The corps won the Drum Corps Associates (DCA) title in 2011 and finished second in 2008, 2009 and 2010.  While he has been percussion caption head, the corps has taken top scores at the DCA championships in 2003, 2004 and 2010.  He has served on many DCA judging committees and task forces.  He has judged percussion, music and visual captions for several regional judging associations.  He first became involved with Minnesota Brass in 1986, playing snare drum.

Dan Rippon:  Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania

Dan Rippon’s most important contributions to the drum corps community have been off the contest field.  He proposed and served as the first coordinator of the Drum Corps Associates (DCA) Class A division.  Ten Class A corps competed in the 2005 DCA championship preliminaries, making it the largest prelim show in DCA history to that date.  He provided computer automation support to the National Judges Association for Website design and a judging profile system.  He also provided design and support services for the computerized DCA tabulation system.  He has served in many DCA positions, including secretary, vice president, business manager, executive board member and assistant treasurer.  He was the first outside member of the board elected to Five Star Brass Productions.  When the Westshoremen were facing difficult times, he stepped in to serve as corps director, helping to create a successful turnaround.  He has judged for DCA and the National Judges Association.  In his early years in the activity, he marched with several corps, including Rochester Crusaders, Grey Knights of St. Mary, Pennsylvania and Johnsonburg Diplomats.  He first marched with the Buck-tail Regiment, playing cymbals in 1976 and 1977.

Anthony Smith:  Milton, Massachusetts

During his drum corps involvement spanning more than 50 years, Anthony Smith has made a major impact on the activity as a percussionist, visual designer and through his work in administration and management.  He won several individual championships as a snare drummer.  As a member of Boston Crusaders at age18, he helped design and played the first double bass drum in drum corps history.  When he auditioned for the United States Air Force Drum and Bugle Corps, not only was he accepted immediately but offered a teaching position moments after his audition.  He helped restructure the Boston Crusaders in 1983 to keep the corps from folding then remained corps director until 1995.  Since he rejoined the Concord Blue Devils in 2006 as visual design consultant the corps has won three Drum Corps International (DCI) titles.  He had also been design consultant from 1979 to 1982.  As the visual caption chairman for Drum Corps Associates (DCA)), he has helped pioneer a new judging system that takes into effect the entertainment values of field programs.  He began judging percussion and visual captions for DCI, DCA and MJA in the early 1970s.  He has been a drill designer or consultant with such well-known units as New York Skyliners, Crossmen, Boston Crusaders.  He joined Boston Crusaders in 1962 as a baritone player then switched to play snare drum with the Valiants for two years before returning to Crusaders in 1965.  His brother Neal Smith was inducted into the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame in 2008.

John “Duke” Terreri: Pine Hill, New Jersey

Duke Terreri has been involved with drum and bugle corps activity since 1956 when he was a horn player with St. Lucy’s Cadets.  He has been a major contributor to the alumni drum and bugle corps movement for more than two decades, providing services as music instructor, assistant instructor, arranger or performer with such high profile alumni organizations as Archer Epler Musketeers, Hawthorne Caballeros, New York Skyliners, Reilly Raiders, St. Lucy’s, Blessed Sacrament Golden Knights, Morristown Colonials, Lambertville Volunteers.  He served as director of St. Lucy’s senior corps for three years and has arranged and taught the brass section of such corps as New York Skyliners, Hawthorne Caballeros and St. Lucy’s. He is highly proficient at teaching the techniques and styles required to get the most out of his ensembles. He is the current conductor and music director of the Audubon Bon Bons All Girl Drum and Bugle Corps alumni chorus. He has played horn with Archer Epler Musketeers, New York Skyliners and Hawthorne Caballeros and arranged for and instructed a number of junior, senior and alumni corps since 1973.  He has also been director of St. Lucy’s senior corps and co-director of St. Lucy’s Alumni corps.  He has judged music and brass captions for Drum Corps Associates (DCA), Metro Adjudicators Association and Eastern Marching Bands Association. He served in the United States Army from 1970 – 72 with the 33rd Army Band Special Troops Group in Heidelberg, Germany and was bandmaster from 1995 to 1997 while serving as a captain in the Pennsylvania State Army Reserve Band.  He was recently elected to the New Jersey Drum Corps Hall of Fame and the Pennsylvania Drum Corps Hall of Fame.

President’s Lifetime Achievement Award for 2012

John Bosworth: Williamsport, Pennsylvania

John Bosworth reinforces the word “World” in the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame.  His drumming career spans two centuries and nearly 70 years.  He has performed in 28 countries, from the Azores to Wales, from Austria to Australia.  He has taught drum corps and drumming in countries such as Switzerland, Scotland, Oman, and, of course, the U.S.A.  He played in nearly all of the U.S. states and all of the Canadian provinces, for various world leaders and kings and queens, including Queen Elizabeth of England and Nikita Khrushchev of the Soviet Union.  He has performed in front of 11 U.S. Presidents, from Harry Truman to George Bush.

He began drumming in 1942 at the age of three.  By the time he was 12, he was traveling by bus from his hometown of Williamsport, Pennsylvania to New York City, where he took drum lessons from Gene Krupa and Cozy Cole.  In 1954, he joined the Williamsport Black Eagles Sr. Drum Corps, with whom he played for four years.  During his final years of playing with the Black Eagles the corps was taught by John Dowlan, who was also the percussion instructor for the United States Air Force (USAF) Drum Corps.  He encouraged John to audition in Washington, D.C., which led not only to a 28 year career in Air Force musical groups, but to a lifetime of travel, performing, instructing, and arranging.

He performed with the USAF Drum Corps from 1958 until the Corps’ demise in 1964.  He was simultaneously playing with the USAF Pipe Band, which had once been a part of the AF Drum Corps and later became a separate unit. After the AF Drum Corps was disbanded, he was the percussion instructor and lead snare drummer for the USAF Pipe Band, until it was terminated in 1974.  After that, he played with USAF Ceremonial Band and the USAF Band.  Because of his exceptional service with various elements of USAF Band Squadron, he was awarded the prestigious Meritorious Service Medal from Colonel Arnold Gabriel.

Concurrent with his AF career were many instruction and arranging opportunities, including instruction of drum corps such as the Williamsport Black Eagles, Milton Keystoners, Esquires, and the VIPs from Washington, D.C. After his discharge, he became the founder and director of the American Originals Fife and Drum Corps, which brought innovative rudimental drumming and visual effects to a different medium.

Later, his career in instruction led him to Switzerland, where he taught the world renowned Top Secret Drum Corps from Basel, a job that eventually led him to the middle eastern country of Oman, where he originated, directed, and instructed the Royal Guard Drum Corps of the Sultanate of Oman for seven years.

Since its founding in 1976 by the late Vince Bruni of Rochester, New York, membership in the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame has grown from six charter members to 459 regular and associate members from the United States and Canada, who have contributed to the activity across North America, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, the Middle East, South Africa and Japan.

The World Drum Corps Hall of Fame is a non-profit organization honoring those individuals who have contributed significantly over many years to the development and continuing excellence drum and bugle corps activity.  The organization also seeks to preserve the history of the drum and bugle corps movement in North America by selecting a noteworthy junior and all age (senior) corps of the decade.

This is DCA! – Doug Oravez (director) Ct Hurricanes

May 29th, 2012

Written by:  Bill Flaker, DCA PR team

Doug Oravez began his drum corps career in 1961 with the Hot Shots from Norwalk, Ct. As a young boy growing up on the Shoreline of Connecticut, Doug and his father quickly found out that his athletic achievements were not going to bloom into a career (he could not hit a fastball to save his life).  Being a local firefighter, his father urged him to join Norwalk’s Hot Shots Drum & Bugle Corps, sponsored by the local police and fire departments.

After spending the bulk of his teenage years as a Hot Shot, Doug decided in May of 1970 to try his talents with the world champion corps in Connecticut: The Hurricanes. As a soprano bugle rookie, Doug was eventually thrown into the drill to fill a hole, and the rest is history.  Doug was able to grow his talents under many great Drum Corps icons, such as brass arrangers Frank Dorritie, John Arientano, Laurie Kunzle, Ray Fallon, Buddy Bibeault, Dave Dion, as well as World Drum Corps Hall of Fame members Art Hylwa, Pepe Notaro and Joe Gennaro. He advanced his playing skills to lead soprano and marched in the line until 1999.

Doug returned to the Hurricanes in 2007 and 2008 to fill a soprano hole.  Since 1997, he has been a visual instructor for the Hurricanes.  He has enjoyed passing along the experiences gained being taught marching technique by many drum corps legends, including:  Ed Condon, Bob Woods, Bob Daniels, Ed Yagovane, Dennis Banks, Mickey Kelly, Neal Smith, Dan McBride, and Jeff Smith.

After sifting through the many years of memories, Doug recounted his most memorable drum corps moment. In 1981, at DCA finals in Philadelphia, the Hurricanes were on the verge of capturing their third DCA World title. His solo performance in the corps trademark song "Return of the Magnificent Seven" earned him a large following of fans, who attempted to take his gloves, sash and other items after the retreat ceremonies. Doug also has hundreds of war stories from when the Hurricanes were still an all male corps, and the competition was extremely fierce between many of the DCA units.  Many stories can be told from those days, but they would have to be censored first!  Doug was named Hurricane of the Year in 1974; and along with being a member of the Hurricanes Hall of Fame, Doug is proud to be an associate member of the World Drum Corps Hall of Fame.

Doug was named the Hurricanes Corps Director at the end of the 2011 season.  He is excited and proud that the 2012 Hurricanes are headed in a new direction, having rebranded the corps with a new logo, uniform changes, and an overall new attitude. The corps is much further along in their preparation for the competition season than in previous years. The percussion section is full and the color guard may turn out to be the best ever in Hurricanes’ history.  The horn line is under new leadership, and the last remaining spots are filling up. The Hurricanes are rich in tradition, and the change from police style headgear to shakos, along with their choice of show music for 2012 brings a new-look Hurricanes to the DCA stage in 2012. This year’s production is entitled "Blokes and Birds", and features a unique blend of traditional and 60’s invasion British music that is very recognizable and entertaining.

The 2012 Hurricanes are entering the summer a much younger corps than in past, thanks to the efforts of a new recruiting model that aligned the corps with local high school marching band circuits and clinics.  Doug has been involved with the Norwalk High School Marching Band since 1988, serving as both a visual and color guard instructor. The band has won several Bands of America regional competitions, as well as going undefeated at the football bowl game competitions they have participated in.

Doug Oravez has come full circle with the Connecticut Hurricanes, starting out as a horn player, to visual instructor, and now as corps director. His reputation is highly regarded, having earned the moniker of "The General" from the countless members he has influenced. The drum corps community wishes Doug much success as his forty-four years of drum corps experiences will benefit the Connecticut Hurricanes a great deal.

Shaun Canon’s Live for Music aims for new heights with music video (DCI corps featured)

May 21st, 2012

From DCI's website:

International singer, songwriter Shaun Canon, the creator of Live for Music recently wrapped shooting his latest music video which he hopes will strike a chord with kids across the country and inspire them to pick up an instrument.

Canon, who has long been a big advocate for music education and himself a former member of the marching band at his school, knew the direction his "Live for Music" video should take after meeting with Drum Corps International. "I wanted to create a music video that would motivate students to join their school band, orchestra, marching band or local drum corps. I wanted the music video to highlight the benefits of playing an instrument," Canon said.

The "Live for Music" video slated for release on YouTube Saturday, May 19, features high school students, drum corps performers and footage from the DCI World Championships.

To musically energize the video from start to finish Canon called upon longtime friend, YouTube sensation from “America’s Got Talent,” Lindsey Sterling. Sprinkled in throughout the music video are other YouTube standouts including Danielle Lowe and Brianna Barnhart, who joined forces with Canon to musically represent and support music education.

Respected director Dane Larsen was contacted and after hearing Canon’s song, “Live for Music,” was sold on the project. Larson says, “I had a clear vision of where the video should go. “Live for Music” is a song that’s relevant to everyone because we all love music which lifts us up when we’re down and celebrates love and passion for life. All that needed to be done through the camera lens was to show real life moments of people living for music and genuinely enjoying the music. Throughout the video we show Shaun’s fans singing and dancing. As it moves along more and more people are showcased. It was a simple way of illustrating how Live for Music is spreading.”

After learning about Drum Corps International Canon had no doubt that this organization and its participants needed to be highlighted in the music video. “It’s great to be a part of such a fantastic organization like Drum Corps International. I’ve been working with them for the past few months and have been highly impressed by the young students and their dedication. Drum Corps International is doing amazing things for young musicians around the country. I am thrilled to support such an organization,” Canon said.

“Drum Corps International couldn’t be happier to be working with Shaun Canon. He has the ability to reach those involved in the marching music world as well as attract new interest and new people,” said DCI Director of Business Development John DeNovi. “We appreciate the video paying tribute to anyone who is or has been in the marching music world. With Shaun’s passion and vision for this project we are excited about the doors he can open for both students and teachers.”

With the help of NAMM, the NAMM Foundation and its SupportMusic.com music education advocacy efforts, School Jam USA, Drum Corps International and the popularity of YouTube, the goal is to reach the members of the 22,000 marching bands nationwide and the approximately 8 million individuals involved with various music programs coast to coast.

Larsen feels the video will be a big success. “Shaun is truly passionate about the song and the music. He lives and breathes it. You can see and feel it when he sings to kids in the classroom. His charisma is contagious; people are drawn to him and his voice. He’s like the nice guy next door who happens to kick it as a singer. It’s an unexpected surprise when he sings to someone for the first time. They’re instantly a fan of both him and his music. That’s what happened to me,” Larsen said.

“I hope to inspire kids who might be sitting on the fence about joining band to do exactly that,” Canon said when asked why he put so much time and effort into the “Live for Music” video. “I want all band kids around the country to feel a sense of pride when they watch this video. I hope all who aren’t in band gain a greater appreciation for those who are. It’s cool to be in a drum corps! It’s fun and exciting to be a part of something so competitive.”

On May 19 students of all ages, teachers and the general public can go to YouTube.com/liveformusictv and decide if Canon will accomplish his goals with his latest video, "Live for Music."

October 24th, 2011

DCA is pleased to announce that President, Gil Silva has appointed Kevin Hassan as Chairman of the Alumni Spectacular. The nostalgia and entertainment this show brings to the DCA World Championship has become one of the most popular segments of the weekend.  The performing corps represent the deep history of the drum corps activity and continue to please audiences.

Be sure to join us in Annapolis, MD in 2012 for this "spectacular" event!

DCA – By the numbers

October 16th, 2011

Some interesting facts about DCA through the years! Did you know ....

The first corps to win back to back championships were the Caballeros, with wins in 1972 and 1973. They won again in 1974, making them the first corps to win a three-peat.

The LOWEST score ever that won the DCA Open Class title was 79.475, when the Hurricanes won the championship in 1969.

The HIGHEST score that ever won the DCA Open Class title was 99.025, earned by the Buccaneers in 2009

The Skyliners and Sunrisers are the only corps to have won the DCA Championship in both Open Class and Class A.

The Govenaires have won the Class A championship more times than any other corps (2006, 2009, 2011)

The Buccaneers have won the Open Class championship more times than any other corps (10 wins) .

The longest consecutive winning streak in DCA history belongs to the Buccaneers. Their streak started on June 18, 2005 and ended on September 3, 2011 . During that period, they won 64 contests, including 6 championship titles. The Bucs were also the first corps to win the DCA championship twice (1965 & 1968) .

The Westshoremen and Minnesota Brass, Inc. are the only Open Class corps that have won the championship only once.

The first CONTEST the Bushwackers ever won was the 1986 World Championship!

On August 8, 1971, the Skyliners became the first corps in DCA history to score more than 90 points in a competition (90.7) . The corps went on that year to become the first corps to win a DCA championship with a score of more than 90 points (91.5) .

In 1973, the Caballeros became DCA's first corps to have an undefeated season.

The highest score ever attained by a Class A corps is 86.60, by the Govenaires on August 21, 2011.

Chops, Inc. was the first corps from the state of Minnesota to win a DCA championship (2005 Class A).

The highest score ever attained by a corps outside of the United States at a DCA Championship is 92.375 earned by the Inspires from Yokohama, Japan in the 2004 preliminary contest. The highest non-US finalist score is 90.413 by the Kidsgrove Scouts (England) at the 2010 finals.

Lastly, difficult as it is to believe, the Matadors from Providence, RI never won a DCA contest!

Fun stuff!

A Conversation with Minnesota Brass and the Reading Buccaneers

October 13th, 2011

Eric Molho is the Executive Director of Minnesota Brass; Tom Moore is the Public Relations director of the Reading Buccaneers

How would you evaluate the 2011 season?

Tom:  Well, for the Reading Buccaneers, the 2011 was the complete embodiment of everything drum corps at its finest is all about:  entertainment, the thrill of performance, the transforming journey, the love of family, healthy and respectful competition and the satisfaction of a job well-done.

Much has been made about the Buccaneers run of competitive success and its impact on DCA, and we’re certainly very proud of all of those achievements, but that focus sometimes obscures the corps’ most important accomplishment during this period: providing a life-altering experience for hundreds of members and leaving fans with great performances to remember. Perhaps that was more on display in 2011 than in any recent year.  It was quite emotional, and emotionally satisfying. We asked our members to embrace a bold change of artistic direction for the corps, and they did with abandon.  They threw themselves into a fantastic production and performed with the joy and emotion they felt all year long.

Eric:  I couldn’t agree more Tom, and the same is true for Minnesota Brass.  Now that a few weeks have passed and we’re starting to look ahead to 2012, I think I’ve gained some perspective on what winning the Championship has meant to our organization.  Don’t get me wrong, it was a wonderful accomplishment and great feeling, but the real success of the season has to do with all the things you mentioned.  The corps worked so hard and made such lasting memories.  Every year on our member survey we ask our performers the reasons they do this crazy thing called drum corps and the top two answers are always the same:  the love of performing and the friendships made.  Our season was successful because of ten months of work together, not one score.

Tell us about the relationship between the Buccaneers and Minnesota Brass

Eric: After prelims, we stood behind the stadium getting our pictures taken.  As the final two scores were read, the corps erupted into celebration.  After the initial hugs and high fives, the very first person from outside of the corps to share congratulations with me was Carl Rucco, the Staff Coordinator of the Buccaneers.  His smile was genuine, his comments were humbling.

That’s the kind of organization the Buccaneers are.  They were absolutely encouraging, supportive and the epitome of class throughout the weekend as we pushed each other to be even better.  I can’t tell you how many Buccaneer members came over and congratulated our members during finale, how many have become fans and left notes on our facebook page.  We’re lucky and proud to have such great friends with whom we compete.

Tom: One of the true joys of the 2011 season was to be part of the deepening sense of mutual admiration and respect that exists between the Buccaneers and our friends at Minnesota Brass.  The growing bond between us seemed improbable, since we only had the good fortune to share the field with MBI once or twice a season.  But how this team has carried itself and interacted with us, with class, grace and friendship--that starts from the top of the organization and flows down to every member--has made us true fans, and friends.

What was Championships Weekend like for your corps?

Tom: The stage was set for a very emotional Championships weekend.  After the prelims scores were announced, instead of dejection and disappointment, our members were happy for MBI and motivated to deliver their best performance of the year on Sunday.  Sunday’s rehearsal block was, in a word, magical.  The looseness, confidence, camaraderie and fun that was emanating from the corps was palpable.  We knew the Buccaneers were set to deliver an exceptional performance on the most important night of the year.  We saw before our eyes that the members really understood what it was all about, all along.  And it was emotional.  That Sunday afternoon at Medina said more about the Reading Buccaneers than any trophy, and we all knew it.  It was reflected in our Finals performance.

Eric: The weekend will always be remembered by our members.  There were so many great moments that they will take with them from the downpour on finals night, to receiving a huge ovation when we arrived at the hotel after prelims.  One of the things that I know I’ll always remember is the support from so many other corps.  As a fan, it’s sometimes hard to see just how encouraging and supportive the corps are to one another ‘backstage.’  We received an amazing welcome from the Caballeros as we headed to the stadium on Friday night.  When we arrived there, we were greeted by our friends the Govenaires in the far endzone, screaming at the top of their lungs as we entered the field.  We’re so lucky to participate in an activity that takes the very best aspects of competition—the push to do better, the incentive to achieve at new levels--while leaving a lot of the negative baggage behind.

What do you remember from the finale?

Eric: To be honest, it’s still a blur for me!  I was making my way through the corps, congratulating our members on the season when the last two scores were announced.  It was an overwhelming feeling of pride for all the hard work the members, our volunteers and our staff had put into the season.  There was a fantastic display between all the corps and especially the Buccaneers and Minnesota Brass.

Soon most everyone had left and we shared the field with the Govenaires which was also a special moment.  A lot of folks may not know this, in the midst of the downpour, one of our trumpet players walked up to his girlfriend from the guard, dropped to one knee and asked her to marry him.  The newly engaged couple were immediately serenaded by horn players from the Govies, who spontaneously broke into the “Wedding March” when the news spread.  How do you top that?

Eventually, it seemed like the whole stadium was empty and we stood there in the pouring rain savoring the moment.  The pictures of amazing smiles and heartfelt tears do far more than I can to explain what it was like.

Tom: As scores were announced, it was quite emotional to see both the Buccaneers and MBI members show the class, dignity and sportsmanship that they’re known for.  As the Buccaneers were announced in second place, the ovation and appreciation coming from MBI was bold and genuine.  And as MBI was announced as the champions they are, the sentiment was returned.  Seeing members of both corps congratulating one another in a vain attempt to dodge raindrops was a sight to behold.  Seeing the words of appreciation and respect flowing in emails, Facebook postings and greetings since that weekend has been heartwarming.  I can’t tell you how many times I heard Buccaneers make comments like “I’m glad it was them” or “what a great group of people.”  It’s wonderful that two corps with a healthy level of mutual respect are pushing each other to be better--on and off the field.  That can only mean great things for DCA and 2012!

Midwestern Sweep at DCA Championships

September 8th, 2011

What a weekend!

The Govenaires from St. Peter, MN, notched their 3rd Class A Championship on September 4, 2011 with an 84.93. Fusion Core from Morris County, NJ finished second with an 83.93, just edging out 3rd place Carolina Gold, who were only .08 behind with an 83.85 . Windsor Regiment, from Princeton Junction, NJ was the fourth finalist scoring 78.23 in their very first year in competition.

Just a couple of hours after the Govenaires turned in their championship performance, Minnesota Brass from St. Paul MN claimed the DCA Open Class World Championship, ending the astounding six-year run of the Reading Buccaneers. Minnesota Brass scored 98.35, followed by Buccaneers with a 97.45 .

In the Mini-Corps Championship, Star United from Indianapolis, IN shocked the packed house at the Rochester Convention Center on Friday night, September 2 with a stunning performance that earned them a score of 100 points!

And how about a standing-O for the Reading Buccaneers! What an accomplishment; six consecutive undefeated seasons, 64 straight 1st place finishes. An amazing accomplishment and a record that will be very tough to beat!

So we say goodbye to Rochester, New York - home of the DCA World Championship for the last six years as we set sail for Annapolis, Maryland for 2012 and 2013. Tickets are already on sale, exclusively through Drum Corps International.

If you have never been to a DCA World Championship weekend, you must! Not only is it 3 days of competitions, its largest drum corps social event you'll ever experience. Class A, Open Class, Prelims, Finals, Mini Corps, Individuals and Ensembles, a huge drum corps party for fans of all ages.

Here's a little 3 1/2 minute taste of the 2011 Championships we hope you'll enjoy. See you in Annapolis!

(ed. note: earlier, we incorrectly identified the Govenaires as the first corps from Minnesota to win a DCA title. Although no longer an active DCA corps, Chops, Inc. won the Class A title in 2005, a year before the Govenaires. Our apologies for the error.)

THIS IS DCA! Corps come together in the time of need.

August 16th, 2011

THIS IS DCA!

This e-mail was sent to Gil Silva (DCA President) from the Hawthorne Caballeros.
THIS is a perfect example of how our corps come together in the time of need.

Mr. Silva,

I wanted to tell you about our evening in Toms River. As always, the show was well run and very well attended. But, this year's show was something very special for all of DCA.

After a great day of rehearsal, the members of the Hawthorne Caballeros left their practice sight and came to the high school ready for a special performance. It didn't take long to realize that this performance would be special, but, not in the way we thought.

The truck carrying all of the pit equipment and more, broke down and wasn't going to make it to the show site. Our moment of panic was short lived. We quickly realized how many friends we have in this activity, and we were grateful for all of them.

The entire drum corps community came together to help us in our moment of need. Carolina Gold gave us their keyboards. The Buccaneers lent us their tympani. The latin percussion came from the Caballero Alumni and Fusion pitched in with their podiums. How's that for teamwork!

Our show went on without a hitch. But the more important lesson was obvious :
Drum corps is about friends getting together and having fun!
Maybe, we work to hard to see it. Maybe, we get caught up in the emotional intensity of competition.

Could we be standing a little too close to the forest to see the trees?
It's moments like this that remind us why we do this in the first place: Drum corps friends are the best!

Thanks to all of the drum corps involved.
I just thought you should know.

Thanks,
Tom Beebe

This is DCA! Empire Statesmen consider entire community to be close members of their drum corps family

August 15th, 2011

Written by Roy Wilson

THIS IS DCA!

The strong bonds of family relationships and a sense of obligation to the community have been important qualities of Rochester’s Empire Statesmen drum and bugle corps since the late Vince Bruni founded the organization in 1983.

The family ties are real, extending through three generations of the Bruni family, and virtual, making individuals and organizations throughout western New York and across the border to southern Ontario important members of the Empire Statesmen family.

The family ties in the organization begin with the Bruni family. David Bruni has been drum major for all 28 years since the corps’ first performance in 1983 right up to this summer’s contest season. David, his sister Laurie and her husband Ron Cheesbro serve on the Empire Statesmen’s board of directors. Laurie and Ron’s two sons have both marched in the Statesmen drum line.

Over the years, corps members have included a variety of family combinations, including husbands and wives, fathers and sons, and brothers. The corps family includes the many volunteers who provide vital support for the performers by serving on committees, preparing food, designing and building props, driving corps vehicles, selling souvenirs, working at bingo games and opening their homes to younger members from outside the Rochester area.

Bob and Anne Woodhams, whose relationship with Vince Bruni dates back to their drum corps youth in the 1960s, have not only pitched in to help with a variety of support services but have provided weekend accommodations in their home for as many as 16 corps members at a time throughout an entire season. Annie and Woody, as they are widely referred to, are fondly called Mom and Dad by a generation of Empire Statesmen.

These family ties within the organization are matched by the group’s wider purpose: to create a strong link to the entire community, not just audiences at field contests, by providing top quality family entertainment in many different settings. This wide focus has taken Empire Statesmen on performance tours across the Atlantic to England and Scandinavia, south to the Caribbean, Mexico and Brazil, breaking new ground in exposing audiences to the excitement of drum and bugle corps music and motion.

Closer to home, the Empire Statesmen have widened the family structure to include school and community groups in New York and Ontario that gain exposure and raise funds from the group’s benefit stage concerts. Each of these performances helps establish a special bond between the Empire Statesmen and organizers, audiences and young student musicians whose programs receive an economic boost.

The kids of the Empire Cadets who receive free music training and performance opportunities are special members of the Statesmen family. These students, who otherwise would have no opportunity to make music, pass along the commitment to the raising the quality of life in the community by enthusiastically participating in local events, including Christmas concerts at city hall and area malls.

Although the Empire Statesmen have won the Drum Corps Associates (DCA) championship five times, the program has never been just about winning contests while also winning audience approval. It’s much higher aim is to train members for life; to produce mature, responsible, capable adults who will make significant contributions to their communities.

Vince Bruni believed that you must challenge individuals to extend their range of capabilities, on and off the field. Exposing corps members to the benefits of self-discipline, top level instruction, teamwork, dedication, ambition, travel and good fellowship creates capable adults with a high sense of self-esteem and the self -confidence to raise standards across their communities.

The Empire Statesmen have always operated in partnership with the community, so that the benefits of striving and achieving on the contest field ripple out year after year in waves of personal accomplishment across Rochester and beyond.
